What Happens at a Career Open Day?
Choosing a career path can be challenging, especially when you're unsure what opportunities are available or what a role involves day to day. That's where career open days can make a real difference.
At Beechwood Trees and Landscapes, our Career Open Day was designed to give attendees a hands-on introduction to the arboriculture, landscaping, and environmental sectors. Bringing together industry professionals, employers, suppliers, and training providers, the event offered a valuable opportunity to explore careers, ask questions, and see the industry in action.
More Than Just a Careers Fair
Many people imagine a career event as a room full of stands and leaflets. While information is certainly important, a good career open day goes much further than that.
Our aim was to create an interactive experience that helped attendees gain a genuine understanding of the industry. Visitors had the opportunity to speak directly with experienced professionals, learn about different career pathways, and discover the skills and qualifications needed to enter the sector.
Whether attendees were school leavers, college students, career changers, or simply curious about the industry, there was something for everyone.
Seeing Equipment and Demonstrations Up Close
One of the most popular aspects of any career open day is the opportunity to see specialist equipment and machinery up close.
Arboriculture and landscaping rely on a wide range of equipment, from chainsaws and climbing gear to chippers, tractors, and MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms). Seeing this equipment in person helps attendees understand the practical side of the work and the variety of roles available within the industry.
Live demonstrations also allow visitors to see how equipment is used safely and professionally while providing a realistic insight into day-to-day operations.

Meeting Industry Professionals
Speaking directly with people who work in the industry is often one of the most valuable parts of a career open day.
Attendees were able to ask questions about training, qualifications, apprenticeships, career progression, and what it's really like to work in arboriculture and landscaping.
These conversations can provide insights that are difficult to gain from online research alone. Hearing first-hand experiences often helps people feel more confident about taking their next step.
Exploring Different Career Opportunities
The arboriculture and landscaping sector offers far more opportunities than many people realise.
Alongside tree surgery and grounds maintenance roles, there are careers in environmental management, ecology, surveying, health and safety, operations, administration, fleet management, training, and business support.
Career open days help showcase the diversity of opportunities available and demonstrate that there are multiple routes into the industry depending on an individual's interests and strengths.
STIHL and Makita were placed next to each other to show off a wide range of equipment.
Building Connections
Networking isn't just for experienced professionals.
Career events give attendees the chance to meet employers, training providers, suppliers, and industry organisations. These connections can often lead to work experience opportunities, apprenticeships, job applications, or simply valuable advice for the future.
Building relationships early can be incredibly beneficial for anyone looking to establish a career within the sector.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting a career open day is seeing the enthusiasm of those interested in joining the industry.
The arboriculture and landscaping sectors play a vital role in managing green spaces, improving biodiversity, maintaining infrastructure, and supporting environmental sustainability. Encouraging the next generation to explore these careers helps ensure the future growth and success of the industry.
By providing opportunities to learn, engage, and ask questions, career open days help bridge the gap between education and employment.
Looking Ahead
Our Career Open Day was a fantastic opportunity to bring together industry professionals, exhibitors, and attendees in one place. The level of engagement, interest, and enthusiasm demonstrated throughout the day highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for people to explore careers within our sector.
We would like to thank all exhibitors, partners, staff members, and attendees who contributed to the success of the event.
If you're interested in attending or exhibiting at a future Career Open Day, we'd love to hear from you. Together, we can continue showcasing the exciting opportunities available within arboriculture, landscaping, and environmental management.
