Working Around a Busy Retail Environment
Tree work in a commercial environment often requires more than simply carrying out the required cuts. Access, timing, public safety and the day-to-day operation of the site all need to be considered before work begins.
Our team recently completed tree surgery works at B&Q in Kidderminster, clearing overhanging branches and cutting back trees alongside a service road used by the retailer.
The work was carried out by Tyson, Ben and Pinder, with the team completing the project over two weekends.
The Challenge
One of the main challenges on this project was working around the retailer's scheduled deliveries.
The service road needed to remain operational, while the tree works also needed to be completed safely. Access restrictions meant that the work could not simply be carried out whenever the team was available.
To minimise disruption to the retailer and its delivery schedule, the work was planned to take place on Sundays.
This allowed the team to carry out the required tree surgery while reducing the impact on normal site operations.

Combining Climbing and MEWP Access
The location and condition of the trees meant that a combination of access methods was required.
The team used both tree climbing and MEWP access to reach different areas of the trees and complete the required works safely.
Using a combination of techniques allowed the team to adapt to the site and work efficiently across the different sections of the job.
The MEWP provided access where climbing was not the most appropriate option, while the climbing team could reach areas where a different approach was more effective.
This combination of skills and equipment was particularly important given the proximity of the trees to the service road and the need to maintain a controlled working area.
Planning Around the Client's Operations
For commercial tree surgery, the work itself is only one part of the job.
The team also needed to consider when the work could take place and how the site would be managed while operations were underway.
By scheduling work on Sundays, the team could accommodate the retailer's delivery requirements and reduce disruption to the site.
This meant the tree surgery could be completed while taking into account the wider operation of the B&Q site.
The Result
Over the two weekends, the team cleared the required overhanging branches and cut back the trees over the service road.
The combination of climbing and MEWP access allowed the work to be completed effectively, while the Sunday working schedule helped the team manage the access restrictions and delivery requirements.
The job was completed on time and to a high standard.
