Fund4Trees Two-Day Bike Ride
Pedals, Passion and Planting
On the 10th and 11th of September 2025, I had the privilege of joining the Fund4Trees two-day charity cycle, an event planned and delivered with trademark precision and enthusiasm by Russell Ball and the trustees.
Over two days we cycled, laughed, got soaked, raised awareness, and shared the vital message about the importance of aftercare for newly planted trees.
Research suggests that as many as 60% of young trees fail without proper maintenance. This ride was about shining a light on that issue while bringing arborists, supporters, schools, and communities together in a way that only Fund4Trees can.
Day One – Testing the Legs
The first day was a 125km challenge that tested both legs and lungs. The route was well attended and brilliantly supported. Along the way we met with community groups and schoolchildren, where the Worcester City Tree Team put on an excellent tree surgery demonstration. Together we planted a succession oak, a living reminder of what teamwork and aftercare can achieve.
Special thanks must go to Gristwood and Toms, who not only backed the event financially but also provided facilities and a support vehicle. Louis, their Area Manager, tailed the peloton throughout. He was a welcome sight with refreshments, spare clothing, and encouragement, especially as the rain swept in (sometimes sideways!). As Russell put it perfectly when we finally rolled in: “we were like drowned rats.”
Day Two – A Social Spin with Purpose
Day Two was a more social 20km ride, but no less meaningful. We joined a local school group to demonstrate mulching and highlight why trees need attention long after they’re planted. Teacher Laura Clark summed it up beautifully: “The children will not forget this for a long time!”
Riders and Highlights
Every rider played their part, but a few moments stood out:
Mick “Traffic Marshal” Boddy kept cars and cyclists in check.
Simon Cox, the indispensable pacemaker, probably did more miles than anyone thanks to some “creative detours.”
Alistair “Derailer Failer” Bayford managed only 10 metres out of the car park before his gears gave up completely.
Simon N’Jai completed both days, 145km in total, without a single training ride. Two rounds of golf a week had apparently been enough!
Andy “Calves” Pointer drove the pace home on Day One, it was agreed his calves deserved their own fan club (or at least a pair of heels).
More Than Miles
Events like this are about far more than the distance covered. They’re about education, camaraderie, and creating awareness so the next generation understands why aftercare matters. Personally, it was inspiring to share the road with so many dedicated people. Friendships were built that will last into future rides.
But the true credit belongs to Russell Ball. His boundless energy, infectious passion, and ability to engage people, whether through conversation or the rousing Grow Tree Grow haka set the tone.
Russell ensures everyone, from seasoned riders to schoolchildren, feels part of the mission.
Looking Ahead
I’m already looking forward to the next ride and would urge anyone reading this to support Fund4Trees in any way you can.
Whether you get on a bike, sponsor a rider, or simply share the message, every effort helps ensure young trees not only get planted, but thrive.
