What Sustainability Actually Looks Like in Arboriculture

Everyone talks about sustainability.

It’s in proposals, policies, and marketing everywhere.

But what does it actually look like in practice?

At Beechwood Trees and Landscapes Ltd, sustainability isn’t something we say, it’s something we deliver, every day, on every job.

This Earth Day, we’re showing you what that really means.

It Starts With Doing the Job Properly

Sustainability in arboriculture isn’t just about planting trees.

It starts with responsible management.

That means:

  • Retaining trees wherever possible

  • Extending tree life through correct pruning

  • Only removing trees when it is necessary and justified

Good arboriculture is sustainable arboriculture.

Poor work leads to decline, rework, and unnecessary removal, which is the opposite of sustainability.

♻️ 100% Recycled – No Exceptions

One of the biggest misconceptions in our industry is that tree work creates waste.

It doesn’t.

At Beechwood, 100% of our tree-related arisings are recycled.

  • Woodchip is processed and sent to biomass energy plants, where it is used to generate renewable power

  • Timber is repurposed for habitat creation, milling, or other beneficial uses

  • Materials are reused across landscaping and environmental projects

Nothing goes to landfill.

Every job contributes back, whether through reuse, habitat creation, or renewable energy generation.

🌱 From Removal to Regeneration

Where tree removal is unavoidable, our focus shifts immediately to improvement.

Through our replace and enrich approach, we:

  • Support replanting with appropriate native species

  • Enhance biodiversity in the surrounding environment

  • Work with clients and communities to improve green spaces

This isn’t about replacing like-for-like, it’s about leaving the environment better than we found it.

🌿 Building Biodiversity Into Every Job

Sustainability isn’t just about carbon, it’s about ecosystems.

We actively look for opportunities to:

  • Create habitat piles from timber

  • Retain deadwood where safe

  • Improve soil health using organic mulch

  • Support planting and green infrastructure projects

These small, consistent actions have a long-term impact on biodiversity and habitat quality.

🚛 Reducing Impact Through Smarter Operations

How we work matters just as much as what we do.

We reduce our environmental impact by:

  • Deploying teams locally to minimise travel

  • Planning works efficiently to reduce fuel use

  • Investing in modern, efficient equipment

  • Maximising productivity to reduce unnecessary site time

It’s about working smarter, not just harder.

🏆 Recognised for Doing It Right

Our approach to sustainability isn’t just internal, it’s been independently recognised.

We’re proud to have been awarded the
👉 Arboricultural Contractor Sustainability Award at the Pro Landscaper Awards

This reflects the systems, behaviours, and standards we’ve built into the business.

Alongside this, our ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation ensures that:

  • Our environmental impact is measured

  • Our processes are structured

  • We are continually improving

🌍 Not Just for Earth Day

For us, sustainability isn’t a campaign or a calendar date.

It’s part of how we operate:

  • On every site

  • With every team

  • For every client

Because the reality is:

👉 Sustainability isn’t an add-on
👉 It’s a standard

🤝 Working With the Right Clients

We work with organisations that understand the importance of doing things properly.

Local authorities, housing providers, and commercial clients are increasingly looking for contractors who can:

  • Deliver high-quality work

  • Reduce environmental impact

  • Provide measurable social and environmental value

And rightly so.

🌳 In Simple Terms

Everyone talks about sustainability.

This is what it looks like in practice.
